Tracking fuel expenses is something small business owners rarely have the time for, which often leads to lost revenue. WEX had developed a fuel card that made it easy for small business owners to regain control of spending, and save a ton of time on paperwork. They had an opportunity to break through at an upcoming trade show but needed to do something that would stand out in a very crowded space.
We created a custom video game that was the booth centerpiece. The game demonstrated the perks of the new small fleet fuel card, while striking up a little friendly competition amongst booth attendees.
To play, each player would operate a steering wheel in front of a large screen and “drive” a fleet truck around a track that was populated with all sorts of obstacles and prizes. Acquiring a "wex card” along the way would help them surpass challenges on the road and rack up extra points.
I worked hand in hand with an animator to come up with a unique look and feel for the game graphics. Together, we designed and built the landscape from scratch, erecting mountains, planting trees and making decisions about the “sunlight”. This was my first time working on a video game, and it was a blast.
The game was a hit at the tradeshow, with lots of attendees coming back for a second and third turn at the wheel.
And our client left with a fun, standout experience that they could use over and over again.
